Austin, Texas–North meets South as Irish youth participate in an Austin Community College program geared toward providing a comprehensive work-study experience that emphasizes conflict resolution and promotes understanding between the different Irish traditions.<\/p>\n
“This program gives students from both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, including Catholics and Protestants, usable job skills while providing them with the opportunity to confront the stereotypes that each group historically holds of each other,” said Dr. Frank Schorn, ACC’s director of The Center for International Programs. “ACC is fortunate to participate in this innovative program.”<\/p>\n
Sixteen youth from the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland are participating in the program, which runs through July 17, 2001. The program which provides practical work experience is designed to help students:<\/p>\n
Enhance their attitudes toward work by improving self-confidence and motivation;
\nImprove their skills base; and
\nIncrease their employment prospects.
\nThe College was selected through The Center for International Programs by educational and employment agencies in Ireland, who are in partnership with The International Fund for Ireland. The Wider Horizons Program was established in 1991 as part of the Irish government’s Program for Economic and Social Progress.<\/p>\n
The program includes computer literacy, welding and construction classes, internship placement in local businesses in these areas, conflict resolution workshops, and cultural immersion activities in Austin and Texas.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
