{"id":36308,"date":"2015-09-16T15:35:20","date_gmt":"2015-09-16T15:35:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.austincc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=36308"},"modified":"2015-09-21T12:43:11","modified_gmt":"2015-09-21T12:43:11","slug":"acc-dance-students-perform-in-groundbreaking-collaborations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.austincc.edu\/newsroom\/2015\/09\/16\/acc-dance-students-perform-in-groundbreaking-collaborations\/","title":{"rendered":"ACC dance students perform in groundbreaking collaborations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Austin Community College (ACC) students are collaborating with industry professionals and the College of Fine Arts at the University of Texas at Austin in a series of performances at the Texas Performing Arts\u2019 McCullough Theatre .<\/p>\n<p>ACC dance students and alumni join the Chicago-based dance company The Seldoms and UT dance students for performances of \u201cPower Goes\u201d on Wednesday, September 16, and Friday, September 18, at 8 p.m. in the McCullough Theatre. The project is directed and choreographed by Carrie Hanson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a groundbreaking opportunity for our students,\u201d says Darla Johnson, ACC dance instructor. \u201cThey\u2019re forced out of their comfort zone; collaborating with a nationally recognized choreographer. It gives them a new sense of confidence, and you see it on stage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The multimedia dance-theater production examines President Lyndon B. Johnson\u2019s mastery of political power and features a 10-minute segment involving 15 local dancers including five ACC students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe reincarnate the history of LBJ\u2019s accomplishments and challenges on stage,\u201d says Anne Wharton, ACC alumna and participant in \u201cPower Goes.\u201d \u201cWe represent the marchers that became iconic to the Civil Rights Movement and the protestors protecting each other during the anti-war movement of the Vietnam War.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s an incredible experience being on stage alongside the choreographer and her company. Each position, movement, and gesture has purpose,\u201d says Joel Davila, ACC dance student.\u201d \u201cAll of us as dancers form a sort of synchronicity together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The dance performances follow \u201cSongwritingWith:Soldiers,\u201d a concert at Texas Performing Arts earlier this month featuring newly written, never-performed songs by ACC student veterans and professional songwriters.
