Our supply doesn\u2019t meet demand,\u201d says Evelyn Rosas, ACC sustainable agriculture specialist. \u201cWe\u2019re seeing fewer farmers and less successful, profitable businesses in agriculture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Central Texas, demand for fruits and vegetables is valued at $356 million, while supply is $78 million, according to consultant New Venture Advisors.<\/p>\n<p>Offered at the 98-acre <a href=\"http:\/\/www.austincc.edu\/elgin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Elgin Campus<\/a>, the agriculture program includes classroom instruction and hands-on training at the campus\u2019 farm and greenhouse. Students learn technical skills such as planning crops and operating equipment as well as marketing and financial planning for growing a viable business.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s exciting to be a part of the future of agriculture,\u201d says Sophia Roseburns, ACC sustainable agriculture student and local herbalist. \u201cI\u2019ve been searching for resources in our area and an opportunity to learn more. I jumped at a chance to enter this program.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Roseburns is a student in the program\u2019s beekeeping course. The course was one of three offered in program\u2019s debut semester this fall. Additional courses will be added in spring including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Small Scale Farming<\/li>\n<li>Beekeeping Intermediate<\/li>\n<li>Marketing for the Small Farm<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cAn entrepreneur who\u2019s interested in agricultural business can come here at square one, get introduced to sustainable agriculture concepts, then get training on the campus farm,\u201d says Rosas.<\/p>\n<p>Students who complete the three-semester program graduate with a certificate in Sustainable Agriculture Entrepreneurship, which recognizes their preparation for entry-level jobs in ecological farm, produce, and school garden management, and related fields.<\/p>\n<p>The program offers its noncredit courses through ACC\u2019s Continuing Education Division, so students don\u2019t need to complete the ACC enrollment process in order to register.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For more information on the Sustainable Agriculture Entrepreneurship\u00a0Program and to enroll, visit ACC\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/continue.austincc.edu\/programs\/agriculture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Continuing Education webpage<\/a>.
