{"id":36949,"date":"2015-11-06T23:23:06","date_gmt":"2015-11-06T23:23:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.austincc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=36949"},"modified":"2015-11-09T22:19:29","modified_gmt":"2015-11-09T22:19:29","slug":"acc-looks-at-demographic-employment-trends-at-planning-retreat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.austincc.edu\/newsroom\/2015\/11\/06\/acc-looks-at-demographic-employment-trends-at-planning-retreat\/","title":{"rendered":"ACC looks at demographic, employment trends at planning retreat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Offering programs that embrace new technology and promote entrepreneurship will help Austin Community College become a flagship for training workers for in-demand jobs over the next decade, according to area experts speaking at the college\u2019s recent strategic planning retreat.<\/p>\n<p>More than 100 faculty, staff, administrators, and community members gathered October 23 to plan how the college will meet the needs of the students and employers of the future.<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_36951\" style=\"width: 335px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.austincc.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/81\/2015\/11\/stratplanning102015.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-36951\" class=\"wp-image-36951\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.austincc.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/81\/2015\/11\/stratplanning102015-300x146.jpg\" alt=\"retreat\" width=\"325\" height=\"158\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.austincc.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/81\/2015\/11\/stratplanning102015-300x146.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.austincc.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/81\/2015\/11\/stratplanning102015-150x73.jpg 150w, https:\/\/sites.austincc.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/81\/2015\/11\/stratplanning102015.jpg 655w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 325px) 100vw, 325px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-36951\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">About 120 faculty and staff discussed trends impacting the student of the future.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The daylong retreat included presentations by representatives of the Texas Workforce Commission, Unity Technologies, and E3 Alliance who gave labor market projections and spoke about the evolving needs of students. Panelists representing entrepreneurship (<a href=\"http:\/\/capitalfactory.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Capital Factory<\/a>), STEM careers (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.girlstart.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Girlstart<\/a>), healthcare (<a href=\"http:\/\/communitycaretx.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CommUnityCare Health Centers<\/a>), and transportation (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rifeline.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rifeline LLC<\/a>) also discussed trends and opportunities in the region.<\/p>\n<p>ACC students Luke Kindelin and Brad Freeman, along with Anita Johnson, ACC Library Services project coordinator, were on hand to discuss the makerspace movement and demonstrate projects created in ACC\u2019s Library Services\u2019 new <a href=\"http:\/\/researchguides.austincc.edu\/makerspace\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">makerspace<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Other takeaways from the retreat:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The student population will be more diverse in 10 years, with income distribution more inequitable. The college must adapt student success strategies and find ways to address the growing number of students coming from poverty.<\/li>\n<li>By combining distance learning with virtual reality, ACC has the potential to be a \u201cgame-changer\u201d while drastically reducing its carbon footprint. Health sciences is just one area that could use virtual reality technology to teach clinical skills.<\/li>\n<li>ACC must align its curricula with the needs of the business community and should partner with businesses and entrepreneurs.
