{"id":37790,"date":"2016-01-13T14:48:38","date_gmt":"2016-01-13T14:48:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.austincc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=37790"},"modified":"2016-01-15T20:52:27","modified_gmt":"2016-01-15T20:52:27","slug":"acc-initiative-accelerates-women-into-it-fields","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.austincc.edu\/newsroom\/2016\/01\/13\/acc-initiative-accelerates-women-into-it-fields\/","title":{"rendered":"ACC initiative accelerates women into IT fields"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Austin Community College District (ACC) launches the Women\u00a0in Information Technology (IT) initiative, a program designed to accelerate women into entry-levels careers in IT, thanks to a grant awarded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation\u2019s NGLC Breakthrough Models Incubator.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a growing disparity within the IT field. Women are underrepresented, making up just 24 percent of the IT workforce nationwide,\u201d says Linda Smarzik, ACC dean of computer studies and advanced technology. \u201cThis program seeks to close that gap by moving the underemployed and unemployed women into education and ultimately a promising career.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Women in IT program offers certificates and degrees in one of four IT pathways, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Computer user support<\/li>\n<li>Networking<\/li>\n<li>Programming<\/li>\n<li>Web development<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-34843 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.austincc.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/81\/2015\/06\/ACC-ACCelerator-2015-2950_Op1_960x367_acf_cropped.jpg\" alt=\"ACC-ACCelerator-2015-2950_Op1_960x367_acf_cropped\" width=\"460\" height=\"176\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.austincc.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/81\/2015\/06\/ACC-ACCelerator-2015-2950_Op1_960x367_acf_cropped.jpg 960w, https:\/\/sites.austincc.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/81\/2015\/06\/ACC-ACCelerator-2015-2950_Op1_960x367_acf_cropped-300x115.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.austincc.edu\/newsroom\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/81\/2015\/06\/ACC-ACCelerator-2015-2950_Op1_960x367_acf_cropped-150x57.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 460px) 100vw, 460px\" \/>The program uses a competency-based model that allows participants to move through courses as they master them.\u00a0 Offered online or in the ACCelerator, a high-tech learning lab at the Highland Campus, full-time students can complete a certificate in as little as two semesters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re developing the workforce that will meet the growing IT demands of our region,\u201d says Smarzik. \u201cAustin\u2019s need for IT workers is outpacing the pool of qualified candidates.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the Austin Chamber of Commerce November 2015 jobs report, there are thousands of Central Texas job openings in the tech field, including approximately 900 in computer user support, 900 in networking, 400 in programming, and 1,100 in web development,<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the early days of computers, women were the core workforce in technology. Getting women back into this field has become a critical need in our region and across the country,\u201d says Steve Jackobs, Capital IDEA executive director. \u201cWe are thrilled to be\u00a0partnering in this way with ACC to take on a tough challenge and positively impact our community.
