{"id":38351,"date":"2016-03-09T17:24:19","date_gmt":"2016-03-09T17:24:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.austincc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=38351"},"modified":"2016-04-05T14:08:00","modified_gmt":"2016-04-05T14:08:00","slug":"white-house-names-acc-and-city-of-austin-a-techhire-community","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.austincc.edu\/newsroom\/2016\/03\/09\/white-house-names-acc-and-city-of-austin-a-techhire-community\/","title":{"rendered":"White House names ACC and City of Austin a \u2018TechHire\u2019 community"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Austin Community College (ACC), in partnership with the City of Austin, joins the White House\u2019s TechHire Initiative, designed to train and develop a home-grown information technology workforce.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCentral Texas is and will continue to be a high-tech hub,\u201d says Dr. Richard Rhodes, ACC president and CEO. \u201cWe must develop new, accelerated pathways to well-paying jobs. Together, we can close the workforce gap.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of the nearly 5 million job openings in the United States, more than half a million are positions such as software developers, network administrators and cybersecurity specialists, according to White House statistics.<\/p>\n<p>The Austin Chamber\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.austinchamber.com\/education-talent\/job-market\/reports\/FEB_2016.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">February jobs report<\/a> indicates approximately 8,000 local jobs in IT.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat TechHire is going to do is to help local leaders connect the job openings to the training programs to the jobs,\u201d said President Barack Obama during at the National League of Cities TechHire Launch in 2015. \u201cIt turns out, it doesn\u2019t matter where you learned code. It just matters how good you are in writing code.\u00a0 If you can do the job, you should get the job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>ACC\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/cis.austincc.edu\/accelerated-programmer-training\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Accelerated Programmer Training<\/a> is designed to give unemployed and underemployed adults rapid training in computer information technology. The program features competency-based learning. Students advance as they master concepts. Those with existing experience and skills can leverage their knowledge to speed time to completion.
