{"id":39673,"date":"2016-07-12T14:21:27","date_gmt":"2016-07-12T14:21:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.austincc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=39673"},"modified":"2016-08-09T13:18:02","modified_gmt":"2016-08-09T13:18:02","slug":"acc-receives-grant-to-support-college-credit-for-heroes-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.austincc.edu\/newsroom\/2016\/07\/12\/acc-receives-grant-to-support-college-credit-for-heroes-program\/","title":{"rendered":"ACC receives grant to support College Credit for Heroes program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Military veterans now have a fast track to become registered nurses through Austin Community College\u2019s Associate Degree Nursing Program, thanks to an $82,000 grant awarded from the Texas Workforce Commission for the College Credit for Heroes Program.<\/p>\n<p>The College Credit for Heroes Program, which awards college credit for military experience, helps address high unemployment rates among veterans. \u00a0ACC\u2019s funding is part of a $375,000 grant statewide to create three new degrees and certificates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re here to offer extended support to our veterans and ensure they receive the programs and services they deserve,\u201d says Dr. Richard Rhodes, ACC President\/CEO. \u201cWe are glad to be a part of College Credit for Heroes, which allows us to create programs that accelerate college success and completion for our service men and women.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The grant will allow ACC to expand the college\u2019s nursing degree mobility track to veterans who served as corpsmen or medics in the last 10 years.\u00a0 Once prerequisites are complete, they can continue with the accelerated track to become a registered nurse in one year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe College Credit for Heroes program will allow local veterans, who have served our country, to use their previous experience to earn an associate degree in nursing,\u201d says Professor Nancy Walters, ACC assistant dean of health sciences. \u201cThe nursing department is eager to assist veterans as they transition from military to civilian life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For more information on ACC\u2019s nursing degree program, contact Nancy Walters at nwalters@austincc.edu.
