Austin Community College (ACC) professors will examine international social and economic affairs in the college\u2019s global issues speaker series this fall.<\/p>\n
The first presentation, \u201cThe Roma In Europe: Minority among Minorities,\u201d is Wednesday, September 28, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Highland Business Center, Room 201 (5930 Middle Fiskville Rd.). ACC Sociology Professor Dr. Samuel Echevarria-Cruz, who spent a year in Romania as a Fulbright Scholar, will discuss the Roma community\u2019s struggle against discrimination.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Roma people are disparagingly referred to as \u2018gypsies.\u2019 We will explore the historical origins of this community along with the popular, negative stereotypes developed over time,\u201d says Echevarria-Cruz. \u201cTogether, we will compare the challenges in the country to the realities minorities face in the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n
The series, presented by ACC\u2019s International Programs Office, is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n
