{"id":40610,"date":"2016-09-23T18:12:19","date_gmt":"2016-09-23T18:12:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.austincc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=40610"},"modified":"2016-09-23T18:12:19","modified_gmt":"2016-09-23T18:12:19","slug":"college-partnership-seeks-to-fill-stem-hole-in-texas-labor-force","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.austincc.edu\/newsroom\/2016\/09\/23\/college-partnership-seeks-to-fill-stem-hole-in-texas-labor-force\/","title":{"rendered":"College partnership seeks to fill STEM hole in Texas labor force"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Austin Business Journal:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/austin\/news\/2016\/09\/12\/college-partnership-seeks-to-fill-stem-hole-in.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">College partnership seeks to fill STEM hole in Texas labor force<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"content__segment\"><a class=\"js-newsleads\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/company\/texas-a-m-university\/250730\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Texas A&amp;M University<\/a> is using a $5 million donation from <a class=\"js-newsleads\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/company\/chevron-corp\/53226\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chevron<\/a> Corp. to establish five engineering academies statewide, including one locally with<a class=\"js-newsleads\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/company\/austin-community-college-district\/23302\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Austin Community College<\/a>, in order to meet the growing demand for graduates trained in science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM.<\/p>\n<p class=\"content__segment\">As part of the Texas A&amp;M-Chevron Engineering Academy at ACC, students would complete their first two years of courses at the community college, then finish their degrees at A&amp;M&#8217;s flagship campus in College Station.<\/p>\n<p class=\"content__segment\">ACC is a regular partner with companies and other Texas schools as it seeks to churn out more high-skilled graduates: it <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/austin\/news\/2016\/07\/01\/how-acc-plans-to-produce-more-workers-for-key.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">is boosting enrollment<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/austin\/blog\/techflash\/2016\/02\/work-begins-on-advanced-wet-lab-at-austin.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">building more wet lab space<\/a> and courting major cloud-computing company Rackspace Hosting Inc. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/former%20Highland%20Mall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to move into the mixed-use development<\/a> it has on the site of the former Highland Mall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"content__segment\">STEM education is in high demand in industries from technology to health care, from manufacturing to energy.
