{"id":40658,"date":"2016-09-29T15:41:24","date_gmt":"2016-09-29T15:41:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.austincc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=40658"},"modified":"2016-11-14T14:53:22","modified_gmt":"2016-11-14T14:53:22","slug":"acc-program-offers-accelerated-pathway-for-adult-learners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.austincc.edu\/newsroom\/2016\/09\/29\/acc-program-offers-accelerated-pathway-for-adult-learners\/","title":{"rendered":"ACC program offers accelerated pathway for adult learners"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Adults without a high school diploma or GED can start college immediately, thanks to a new grant offering free classes through Austin Community College\u2019s (ACC) Career Pathways program.<\/p>\n<p>Funded by the Texas Workforce Commission, the grant allows students to enter ACC through the \u201cability to benefit\u201d enrollment process. The cost of two classes\u2014 including tuition and fees, textbooks, supplies, and bus passes \u2014 is covered. Once students successfully complete the two classes, they are eligible to apply for federal financial aid to pay for additional college.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudents who don\u2019t have a high school diploma can receive financial aid once they show their ability to benefit by passing college-level courses,\u201d says Katherine Dowdy, interim executive director of the Adult Education Division, which oversees the Career Pathways Program. \u201cThis opportunity removes any financial barriers that might prevent them from showing they are ready and able to pursue a college credential and career.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To enter the program, students must complete a Career Pathways application, attend an information session, take an assessment exam, and meet with a Career Pathways program coordinator.<\/p>\n<p>Eligible participants complete the admissions process for credit classes and co-enroll in the college&#8217;s Adult Education Division. They can choose from the following career-technical programs. Spring semester classes begin in January.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Accounting<\/li>\n<li>Architectural and Engineering Computer-Assisted Design (CAD)<\/li>\n<li>Auto Body Collision Repair and Refinishing<\/li>\n<li>Hospitality Management<\/li>\n<li>Information Technology &#8211; User and Computer Support<\/li>\n<li>Medical Office Administration<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Career Pathways is hosting information sessions (see schedule below) at Highland Business Center, 5930 Middle Fiskville Road.
