Austin Community College (ACC) hosts two events in April as part of its spring global issues speakers series.<\/p>\n
The first event, a global creative media panel session, is Wednesday, April 12, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Northridge Campus, Room 4136 (11928 Stonehollow Dr.). Panelists Jim Butler, City of Austin, Bill Hulsey, Hulsey PC, Yvonne Tocquigney, Yvonne Tocquigney Branding Group, and Leca Guimaraes, C3 Presents discuss how the convergence of creative media across disciplines and technologies worldwide is impacting the way these fields interact in the global economy. Topics include intellectual property rights, global branding and marketing, and digital distribution.<\/p>\n
\u201cStudents in any creative field will benefit from a broader understanding of these issues, says William Hayden, director of international programs. \u201cIn order to succeed in their chosen fields, students need exposure to the rapidly changing developments in global creative media.\u201d<\/p>\n
The college will also present a discussion on the current state of affairs in the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, outlining the historical aspects of the territory against the backdrop of U.S. and global economic and political trends. The presentation is Wednesday, April 26, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Eastview Campus, Room 8500 (3401 Webberville Rd.).<\/p>\n
ACC Sociology Professor Samuel Echevarria-Cruz will discuss the treatment of Puerto Rico by the United States government and what the upcoming June referendum could mean to the country holistically when Puerto Ricans will vote on the island\u2019s political status.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe contributions of Puerto Ricans to the United States are many and varied. From Broadway to the firing of the first shots by the U.S in World War I, modern Puerto Rican history is tied to the modern history of the United States,\u201d Echevarria-Cruz says. \u201cWe invite students and the community to examine the current state of the island as it suffers economic crisis and social challenges.\u201d<\/p>\n
The events, hosted by ACC\u2019s International Programs Office, are free and open to the public.<\/p>\n
