{"id":46076,"date":"2023-04-27T13:31:05","date_gmt":"2023-04-27T13:31:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.austincc.edu\/newsroom\/?p=46076"},"modified":"2023-05-03T15:35:40","modified_gmt":"2023-05-03T15:35:40","slug":"acc-recertified-hispanic-serving-institution-by-u-s-department-of-education","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.austincc.edu\/newsroom\/2023\/04\/27\/acc-recertified-hispanic-serving-institution-by-u-s-department-of-education\/","title":{"rendered":"ACC recertified Hispanic Serving Institution by U.S. Department of Education"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI) are responsible for almost 80% of all degrees earned by Latinos, according to <em>Excelencia in Education. <\/em>This semester, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.ed.gov\/about\/offices\/list\/ope\/idues\/hsidivision.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">U.S. Department of Education (ED)<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www2.ed.gov\/about\/offices\/list\/ope\/idues\/hsidivision.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <\/a>recertified Austin Community College District (ACC) for a 12th straight year as an HSI \u2013\u2013 a designation that enrolls at least 25 percent of full-time equivalent students who are Hispanic.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>ACC\u2019s Hispanic student population is fast-growing at the college, from 36% in fall 2018 to more than 40% in fall 2022. In the same timeframe, the college increased degrees and awards by almost 50% for Hispanic students, with more than 4,000 during the 2022 Academic Year.<\/p>\n<p>The college was first designated an HSI in 2011. An HSI institution is eligible for additional grants to expand educational opportunities for Hispanic students. ACC\u2019s most recent HSI grant \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/tled.austincc.edu\/faculty-support\/distance-education\/distance-education-in-focus-grant\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Distance Education in Focus: Improving Course Design and Strengthening Student Support (InFocus)<\/a> \u2014 provides $2.68 million to support work to increase student persistence, retention, and success for Hispanic and low-income students.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.austincc.edu\/newsroom\/2022\/10\/17\/acc-honored-for-successfully-intentionally-serving-latino-students\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The college also was awarded the Seal of Excelencia by Excelencia in Education in 2019 and recertified in 2022.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>ACC also offers its <a href=\"https:\/\/students.austincc.edu\/ascender\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ASCENDER program<\/a>, designed to combine culturally relevant teaching techniques and support services to accelerate student success.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI) are responsible for almost 80% of all degrees earned by Latinos, according to Excelencia in Education.
