The college celebrated the first cohort of the AVANCE to College Program\u2013\u2013 a program to support parents who want to attend college\u2013\u2013 on Wednesday, May 8, at the Riverside Campus.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-flickr wp-block-embed-flickr\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a data-flickr-embed=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/accdistrict\/albums\/72177720316788815\/\" title=\"AVANCE to College Program Graduation by Austin Community College, on Flickr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img src='https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/53706963677_69cceeeaee.jpg' width='800' height='600' alt='AVANCE Graduation - First cohort'><\/a><script async src='https:\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js' charset='utf-8'><\/script>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>AVANCE is a special program in partnership between ACC, AVANCE-Austin, and WorkForce Solutions Capital Area that supports historically marginalized communities. Parents get access to college courses at ACC, special resources, and unique educational opportunities to help them advance in their careers. Their children also benefit from early childhood instruction.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This two-generation approach fosters long-term success and economic mobility for predominantly Latino families, addressing their unique needs and promoting school readiness and family growth.<\/p>\n<p>For more information, visit <a href=\"https:\/\/avanceaustin.org\/programs\/avance-to-college\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/avanceaustin.org\/programs\/avance-to-college\/<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why It Matters<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/iwpr.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/C481_Parents-in-College-By-the-Numbers-Aspen-Ascend-and-IWPR.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">national statistics<\/a>, 1 in 5 college students have children. In the last legislative session, state lawmakers passed multiple bills to provide more support to students with children. In addition to the AVANCE program, ACC and six other colleges and universities nationwide were selected to participate in the FamilyU program. It\u2019s designed to help the college evaluate and improve institutional support for students who are parents in four competency areas\u2014data, policy, culture, and people.
