The event is a kayak race on Lady Bird Lake. This year it’s virtual. Participants compete on their own time between September 25 and October 25.

“ACC is committed to making sure students get all the support they need, and what more Austin way to do this than with a kayaking race on Lady Bird Lake,” says Amy Bawcom, ACC Foundation executive director. “The best way to support Central Texas is by providing scholarships for students which support their educational journey to a career. These scholarships can provide a life-changing difference.”

Participants receive a full-day pass to paddle at the Rowing Dock and can select among three-course options to accommodate all skill levels: a two-mile intermediate course, a one-mile novice course, and a 500-yard kids’ course. Once complete, competitors submit their race time for official tracking. The top finisher in each course will receive a special prize package by mail.

Registration starts at $50 and is open to ages 8 and up. All proceeds benefit the Austin Community College Foundation, which supports student scholarships and equipment used to train students.

ACC Golf Scramble

Registration also is happening now for ACC’s 15th annual Golf Scramble. The event is Friday, October 8, at Riverside Golf Course (1020 Grove Blvd.).

The Golf Scramble benefits the college’s Student Emergency Fund, which helps students cover unexpected financial expenses and can cover the costs of tuition, books, and fees.

Co-sponsored by SpawGlass construction firm, the tournament begins at 8:30 a.m., with check-in starting at 7:30 a.m. Prizes will be awarded for first, second, and third place as well as longest drive and closest to the pin.

Participants are encouraged to register in advance. Registration covers green fees, carts, beverages, and prizes. The cost is $75 per player or $300 per foursome.

What Students Are Saying

“After going through an initial reaction of shock and surprise, I felt a great sense of pride and accomplishment earning a scholarship. It’s no secret that college is expensive, so every opportunity at a scholarship helps,” says Jennifer Ebert.

“If it wasn’t for ACC, I’m not sure I would have ever gone back to college. I started out of high school because it was the affordable option but I was only 17 and didn’t know what I wanted to do. I ended up dropping out and ten years went by. ACC was really helpful in supporting my search for financial aid and applying for scholarships. That support was the only way coming back to school was possible,” says Auburn Clayton.

“I am very grateful for this scholarship, it’s helping me to achieve my goals by having money for gas, books, school supplies, food, and class registration fees,” says Roxana Chynoweth.

“I would like to use this opportunity to sincerely thank you for your generosity. I really appreciate the scholarship that has been granted to me. This would help me pay for my books and tuition and I will always remain grateful. Once again, thank you very much,” says Nobel Udoh.

For more information and to register for the events, visit their websites:

Riverbat Paddle Battle

ACC Golf Scramble

At a time when every dollar counts, you can help students stay on track.
