The Austin Community College District (ACC) Board of Trustees approved two new associate degrees to prepare students for jobs in Austin’s growing creative industry.<\/p>\n
The Associate of Applied Science in Fashion Design equips students with the skills and experience to transform their fashion ingenuity into jobs in Austin’s rapidly-growing fashion industry.<\/p>\n
“Students will learn the technical skills required to become designers, buyers, and fashion design entrepreneurs,” says Nina Means, director of ACC Fashion Incubator. “They’ll work hands-on with some of the most innovative equipment available.”<\/p>\n
Classes will be held at the college’s 7,500-square-foot Fashion Incubator at ACC Highland. Students will take courses in fashion marketing and design and will complete a capstone course in their last semester.<\/p>\n
The program is expected to begin fall 2019 with an initial enrollment of 50.<\/p>\n
Trustees also approved a new Associate of Applied Science in Technical Theater. The program prepares students for entry-level positions at entertainment venues and production companies. It includes two specializations in make-up artistry and costume technology and scenic construction, lighting, and media technology.<\/p>\n
The new degree program addresses the growing needs of Austin’s local creative sector.<\/p>\n
There are more than 230 entertainment venues and performing arts companies in Austin.<\/p>\n
“If you survey the theater owners in town, the biggest thing they lack is someone to help them run their space,” says Thomas Nevill, Arts and Digital Media dean.<\/p>\n
The program is expected to begin fall 2020 with an initial enrollment of 25.<\/p>\n
