Hundreds tour new downtown facility set to launch hands-on trade programs in 2026<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Austin Community College District (ACC) celebrated a major milestone for education and workforce development with a ribbon-cutting and open house at its new Lockhart Center on Thursday, January 29. <\/p>\n

More than 300 community members, students, educators, and local leaders toured the updated historic Ford Building and learned about ACC\u2019s academic and workforce programs.<\/p>\n

\u201cSeeing this building filled is a powerful reminder of why access matters,\u201d says ACC Chancellor Dr. Russell Lowery-Hart. \u201cWe are committed to meeting people where they are and the needs of the community to give them the tools they need for a stable future. When education and workforce development are aligned at the community level, the entire region benefits. We are thrilled to be part of the Lockhart community.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 20,000-square-foot building is located at 303 W. San Antonio Street and focuses on high-demand skilled trades such as plumbing, HVAC, and other career pathways directly tied to regional workforce needs. Programs are designed in partnership with industry to provide fast, stackable credentials that prepare students for in-demand jobs. <\/p>\n

\u201cYou are never too old to learn something new, and ACC looks to be a blessing to steer us in the right path for future endeavors,\u201d says Jeffry Michelson, Lockhart Mayor Pro Tem. \u201cACC, we welcome you to Lockhart.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since Lockhart ISD\u2019s annexation into ACC last year, enrollment among Lockhart ISD residents quickly exceeded expectations. Today, more than 600 local students have enrolled, including high school learners, recent graduates, and adult learners upskilling for new careers. The new center in Downtown Lockhart expands programs even more. <\/p>\n

\u201cThis (center) is much more than bricks and mortar. It\u2019s a symbol of opportunity,\u201d says Mark Estrada, Lockhart ISD Superintendent. \u201cThis community made this investment. Kids are going to drive by here, parents, family members, and they\u2019re going think: \u2018Maybe I should go back to school. I can do this.\u2019 It\u2019s much more than a physical space; it\u2019s proof that Lockhart is investing in its people, and that ACC is investing in our community.\u201d<\/p>\n

The first class launched at the new center this week. More will open through the coming months. Classes also are available at the Lockhart High School for students seeking core academic courses. Classes are open to all, with free tuition available to eligible high school graduates and GED\u00ae completers from the ACC service area.\u00a0<\/p>\n
