October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month<\/strong>. The College provides training for students who are looking to get into the field of cybersecurity, from credentials through the Continuing Education Department to an associate degree<\/a>, all the way to a bachelor\u2019s degree<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Why did you choose ACC? <\/strong><\/p>\n

Coming out of high school, I was a little lost on where life would take me next. I hadn’t applied to many universities during high school, and my junior and senior years were dominated by COVID and quarantine, which set me back further in my college prep. I had an idea of what I wanted to do career-wise but did not know where to start. It wasn’t until talks with some of my siblings, some of whom had attended ACC also, support from my parents, and external research that the choice seemed obvious. It was so close to home and seemed to be a great starting point for me.<\/p>\n

Any faculty or staff you\u2019d like to recognize? <\/strong><\/p>\n

BIG shoutout to Professor Phillip Cupina. Professor Cupina stopped and talked to me in the halls during a semester I was taking his class; he showed genuine empathy and concern and gave me life advice that has stuck with me years later. Also, shout-out to Professor Brian Johnson; he has opened my eyes to the art of screen printing that I had never imagined possible. Lastly, special shout-out to all my coworkers at the HLC ACCelerator! Waddup! <\/p>\n

How did ACC support you?<\/strong><\/p>\n

 ACC has supported me in so many ways. People really underestimate the work that ACC puts in. The biggest support that has been granted to me is the ability to gain a bachelor’s degree debt-free! It is always crazy when I think about that because I really stop and think, “How many institutions are really enabling their students to graduate debt-free? Let alone a Community College.” I couldn’t be more grateful for this opportunity.<\/p>\n

What are you most proud of from your time here? <\/strong><\/p>\n

I would say that I am most proud of the Internship with the Austin Housing Authority that I did last semester in collaboration with my Practicum class here at ACC. Huge thanks to Charla Dubes; she is the reason I landed that internship. Being able to work in an environment with other ACC students who share our career goals, while serving low-income \/ elderly families around Austin, was such a blessing. <\/p>\n

In the spirit of Cybersecurity Awareness Month, what is the single biggest security habit ACC students should adopt alongside MFA to keep their accounts secure? <\/strong><\/p>\n

Use a unique password for your ACC login that you do not use for any other login page. If you need to store it to remember,  make sure you store your password in a secure place that only you have access to. If you ever receive login requests that you did not make, report it and reset your password.<\/p>\n

What are your thoughts on how mandatory MFA impacts the everyday student experience at ACC, and how can the college balance strong security with minimizing user friction? <\/strong><\/p>\n

Mandatory MFA adds a few seconds to the sign-in process for students but is definitely a big change on campus, and we, at the ACCelerator, have experienced students’ response to the change. It can feel annoying and\/or inconvenient for students to have to do this every time they log in to sites like Blackboard, especially if they don’t have a reliable smartphone. ACC can reduce that friction by adding a “remember this device” option for trusted devices, having Okta Verify instructional step-by-step walkthrough videos that Instructors can play to their students, especially during the first week of classes, and having technical support specialists available and easy to reach during technical issues.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s next for you? <\/strong><\/p>\n

Next on my list, I am preparing to graduate with my bachelor’s. I finished my Associate’s this past summer and have an expected graduation with my BAS in Cybersecurity by next year. I plan on working on my upcoming clothing brand, Sahr USA, while knocking out the rest of my credits.<\/p>\n

Anything else you\u2019d like to add? <\/strong><\/p>\n

I can’t emphasize enough how great ACC has been to me. I would’ve never imagined the amount of opportunities that I have been dealt when I first registered here. My advice for anyone thinking about coming to ACC is to DO IT; you will not regret it. They have something for everybody, and remember, it is NEVER too late to go back to school or start. ACC has so many great resources: FOOD Pantry open to all students, Transfer Services, Tutors, Child care resources- you name it, ACC has it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
