Behind the Scenes, ACC Library Services

The Teaching & Learning Excellence Division (TLED) has many offices under its umbrella, all of which focus on support services for faculty in one form or fashion. We regularly share information about our resources and opportunities to keep faculty up to date and apprised of significant initiatives impacting the college.

This month, we’re featuring the “Behind the Scenes” work of ACC Library Services to highlight some resources that faculty might not know are available to them. Library Services is a collaborative system of reference, research, and instructional and technical support, boasting over 80 full-time employees (and soon to be more with San Gabriel) dedicated to our students’ success. Library Services provides access to resources and services for the teaching and learning community at ACC, including our faculty and staff, not just our students. Expert faculty librarians design and deliver instruction to promote information literacy, critical thinking, lifelong learning, and so much more.

Take a peek at a few of the services and programs available for faculty.

Faculty Librarian Subject Experts

Each instructional department at ACC has a subject faculty librarian dedicated to curating and maintaining library materials (books, media, online resources, etc.)  to support that area’s programs and courses.

Classroom faculty are encouraged to contact their Subject Librarian to collaborate in developing collections for their programs since they know their curricula and their students’ needs best.

Information Literacy Presentations

Do you assign research or information-seeking projects to your students? Consider inviting an expert faculty librarian to present to your class about a variety of general and discipline and subject- specific topics, including:

  • Finding books and videos
  • Finding articles in the library databases
  • Online search techniques (ex. keyword, Boolean, truncation, quote searching)
  • Narrowing/broadening research topics
  • Avoiding plagiarism
  • Using MLA/APA/CSE Citation
  • Evaluating websites
  • Recognizing and avoiding fake or misleading news

This is a great way to learn about the comprehensive services that Library Services offers to our students, faculty, and staff, while also providing an opportunity for your students to improve their skills in these important information literacy areas.

BatLab Makerspace

The ACC Library BatLab is a pop-up makerspace for all ACC students, faculty, and staff interested in doing hands-on, real-world, multidisciplinary projects in an informal, co-curricular setting.

What makes the BatLab unique is that faculty, staff, and students can collaborate on projects (all identified with student learning objectives) in a supportive, multidisciplinary, peer-learning community. The open makerspace is often visited by students and faculty from majors such as engineering, CAD, music, computer science and electronics. Some pop-up BatLabs also feature visiting mentors and guest speakers from the local business and engineering community.

A webcast featuring Library Services will be available on Wednesday, February 28th at 10:30 am. Tune in online to learn more about the services from this area, initiatives they have in the works, and more.
