Chinese Calligraphy
Chinese calligraphy is one of the oldest and most revered art forms in the world, with a rich history that dates back over 3,000 years. Its origins can be traced to the Shang Dynasty (1600-1046 BCE) when inscriptions on oracle bones and bronze vessels were used for divination and communication.
The art of writing Chinese characters with a brush and ink is considered the foundation of visual art in China, emphasizing the beauty of individual strokes, balance, rhythm, and the overall flow of character writing. The calligrapher uses different brush techniques and varying amounts of pressure to create dynamic, expressive characters that convey both meaning and emotion.
Chinese calligraphy remains a significant part of Chinese culture. Whether on scrolls, poems, or decorative pieces, it continues to inspire appreciation for the depth of the Chinese language and tradition.
On Friday, January 31st, the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Cultural Center at ACC hosted a Chinese Calligraphy Workshop to celebrate the Lunar New Year. The workshop explored the art of writing beautiful Chinese characters and practicing mindfulness through this therapeutic and creative art form.
