Diwali Celebration – November 14, 2026

Diwali, also called Deepavali, is often translated into English as “Festival of Lights.” The word “deep” means “light” in Sanskrit, while “avali” means “a row”. The lights used during Diwali symbolize prosperity, blessings, and peace. Originating in Hinduism, the festival represents the spiritual victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance.

Diwali is celebrated 15 days after the full moon in the eighth month of the Hindu calendar. The festival is typically celebrated between mid-October and early November on the Gregorian calendar. It is one of the most important festivals and holidays celebrated in India and other South Asian countries such as Fiji, Nepal, Malaysia, and Singapore. The celebration lasts for five days. During this time, families clean and decorate their homes with lights, candles, and religious statues to honor the divine. In the evenings, people light rows of small lamps and candles to symbolize the triumph of light over darkness. Fireworks and firecrackers are set off to drive away evil spirits. During the celebration, women often wear traditional saris, while men dress in kurtas, marking a fresh start and festive spirit.
