Mahjong

Mahjong is a classic tile-based game that originated in China during the Qing Dynasty around the mid-1800s and quickly spread across East Asia. The game now known as mahjong (麻將, májiàng) was originally referred to as 麻雀 (máquè), meaning ‘sparrow,’ due to the sound of the tiles clacking during shuffling, which resembled sparrow chatter. Over time, both the game and its name evolved into the more formalized version of mahjong that we recognize today.

The game’s distinct tiles and intricate rules reflect centuries of Chinese culture, incorporating elements of strategy, skill, and luck. Mahjong was introduced to the West in the early 20th century, and today, it is enjoyed worldwide. Numerous variations, each with its regional twists, are played in countries such as Japan, Korea, and the United States.

The Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Cultural Center at ACC will host a Chinese Mahjong Workshop to celebrate the Lunar New Year. In this fun and interactive workshop, you will learn this classic Chinese game’s traditional rules and strategies. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced player, this event is open to all skill levels!
