From a Single Suitcase to Student Leader: Meet Spring 2026 Graduate Luz G.

On Thursday, May 14, Luz Gonzales will join more than 3,700 graduates at the H-E-B Center at Cedar Park. The milestone reflects not just academic achievement but a powerful journey of growth, leadership, and belonging.

When Luz G. arrived in Austin, she was starting a new chapter with a leap of faith and a suitcase.

“I arrived in Austin with a single suitcase and a French Baccalaureate from Peru. I chose ACC not just as a school but as my personal proving ground. I needed a supportive environment where I could thoroughly learn how the American higher education system works and strengthen my English before transferring to a four-year university.”

Since starting at ACC in fall 2024, Luz has transformed that vision into impact. An Honors Program student earning her Associate of Arts in Economics, she quickly became a powerful voice for students by stepping into leadership roles across campus.

Adjusting to a new country, language, and culture tested her confidence early on.

“At first, my English felt like a barrier, and I was afraid to speak up or fully express myself. Over time, I learned to embrace that discomfort. When I began advocating for others and engaging in student leadership, my perspective shifted. I was no longer focused on speaking perfectly but rather on making a tangible impact.”

That shift sparked something bigger. Luz became a student leader, serving in Student Government, eventually rising to Senate Chair, and later leading as President of Sigma Kappa Delta and the College’s first International Student Club. Along the way, she helped raise $25,000 for an emergency assistance fund to support fellow students.

“I am most proud that I did not just pass through this school. I actively helped build something deeply meaningful. Knowing I played a direct role in creating safe spaces where students feel seen, supported, and empowered.”

She credits the people around her for helping shape her journey. From Dr. Jonathan Tyner, who made her feel valued and seen, and Maze and Jewel Ernest, who helped with her transfer journey, to Alejandra Polcik and Diana Gorostieta Martinez with the Ascender program, who treated Luz as a true ally and provided the platform to advocate for student resources. Luz also recognized Dr. Guillermo ‘Willie’ Martinez for opening doors, and Kelly and Candice Brown for always being there with a smile and reassurance to help her keep moving forward.

“It truly takes a village, and my village changed my life. Their belief in me went far beyond standard academic guidance. It was a profound investment in my future. ACC truly loved me to success. I learned to fully trust the process. That profound sense of support gave me the confidence to grow, take bold risks, and fully invest in my educational journey.”

As she prepares to graduate, Luz is already looking ahead. She plans to transfer to a four-year university and pursue both a master’s and a doctorate, with a long-term goal of mentoring and empowering future students.

“My long-term vision is clear. I want to become a dedicated mentor and empower the next generation of students to walk confidently into rooms they once thought were completely closed to them.”

Her message to others, especially international students, is grounded in the journey she’s lived.

“Never be afraid to ask questions, and never apologize for starting over… Wear your accent with pride because it is a powerful testament to your courage… Your unique perspective is a tremendous asset—never doubt that you belong.”

Help celebrate Luz and the Class of 2026 by sharing a message of encouragement on the Padlet Wall.
