Travis County Recognizes ACC’s Free Tuition Program with Proclamation

A group of approximately 18 people stands together in the Travis County Commissioners Court chamber for a recognition photo. Several people in the center hold framed proclamations while the group smiles toward the camera. The Travis County seal and U.S. and Texas flags are displayed behind them at the dais, with commissioners, community partners, and Austin Community College representatives gathered to celebrate the recognition.

The Travis County Commissioners Court recognized Austin Community College District (ACC) and its Board of Trustees during its Tuesday, July 14, meeting. The county presented a proclamation honoring Trustees and the College’s Free Tuition Pilot Program for its impact on expanding access to higher education across Central Texas.

The proclamation recognizes the ACC Board of Trustees for its strategic leadership in strengthening enrollment, persistence, and completion while helping transform opportunities for Central Texas students and the region’s workforce.

The Free Tuition Pilot Program launched in 2024. As a first-dollar tuition initiative, it’s designed to remove financial barriers for eligible high school graduates and GED® completers across the ACC service area.

Since its launch, the program has helped reverse a decade-long decline in college-going rates, contributing to the region’s highest direct-to-college enrollment since 2011.

The Commissioners Court also highlighted the program’s impact on student success, noting:

  • A 49% increase in the number of students returning for their second year of college.
  • Overall fall-to-fall persistence is rising to 65%.
  • Free Tuition students are enrolling full-time at nearly twice the rate of the overall ACC student population.
