Work on 2022 G.O. Bond resumes at Hays Campus

Following an intentional pause of all 2022 General Obligation Bond projects, work is once again moving forward. The ACC Board of Trustees heard an update from ACC Chancellor Dr. Russell Lowery-Hart about plans to restart planning for the Hays Campus during the regular meeting on Monday, November 4, 2024.

The Chancellor informed the board that the College is moving forward with laying out the plan for the Health Science expansion. In April 2023, the Board approved HarrisonKornberg Architects, LLC to design a new Health Sciences Building. In July 2023, Kitchell Contractors, Inc. was selected as the contractor for the project.

The College took an intentional pause on most campus construction projects when Dr. Russell Lowery-Hart came on board as the new Chancellor in fall 2023 to evaluate shifts in local workforce demands and the evolving needs and preferences of our students.

Though the original bond proposal data remains relevant, the Central Texas community has changed in the post-COVID economy. During the pause, the College engaged with students and the community to better understand the shifts. The College explored where and how students are now taking classes, including on campus and online.

“After taking a thoughtful pause and assessing where we stand, one thing is clear: the need for a robust, skilled workforce persists, particularly in the healthcare sector,” says Lowery-Hart. “It’s on us at ACC to respond to that call and create spaces where our community can not only learn but grow and succeed. Expanding these programs to our Hays Campus will ensure all students in our area have access to the resources they need.”

Now that work is resuming, ACC is moving forward with plans for a new Building 5000 with the following health science programs discussed to be included:

  • Nursing ADN (associate degree), LVN (vocational nursing certificate), and RN-to-BSN (bachelor’s degree) programs
  • Dental Hygiene
  • Surgical Tech
  • Radiology Tech
  • Phlebotomy
  • EMS (Paramedic)
  • Pharmacy Tech
  • Medical Laboratory Technology
  • Sonography
  • Health Sciences pre-requisite classes

As plans become clear, updates will be shared at austincc.edu/bond.
