Pre-conference workshop: A free pre-conference workshop will be held on April 18 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm for those new to competency-based education (CBE). The purpose of this workshop will be to discuss the basics of CBE and how to get started in CBE.

The Fast Track to Success Project invites you to submit proposals for presentations, panels, course demos, and birds of a feather in the second annual conference on innovation in higher education. This conference will provide a forum for sharing lessons-learned, strategies, outlooks, data, and elements of CBE pedagogy and other innovative models at all levels of instruction and learning in higher education. The theme of the conference is Leveraging Innovation in Higher Ed! We welcome all submissions aligned with this theme. The program will be selected through this open call for submissions and a review by members of the conference steering committee.

Submissions should fit in one of the following tracks:

  • Program/Curriculum design and development
  • Faculty development and support
  • Financial aid
  • Student support
  • Ed tech
  • Assessment, evaluation, and metrics
  • On the horizon
Presentations

Presentations describe, but are not limited to, a current CBE or innovation project, research project, classroom experience, teaching techniques, curricular design, evidence of student success, and engagement with innovative academic projects. Each presentation will be maximum 45 minutes in length including Q & A.

The submission of a presentation will include a maximum 250-word summary that includes the title, objective, significance, and description of the session.

Panels

The purpose of the panel is to present diverse views and multiple perspectives on a specific topic. An effective panel is one with four participants including the moderator. Each panel session will be maximum 45 minutes in length including Q & A. The panelists could be faculty, administrators, support staff, ed-tech companies, or students. Panel submission will include the names and institutional affiliations of the panelists along with a maximum three-sentence position statement from each panelist. In addition, the panel submission will include a maximum 250-word overview of the panel including the topic, objective, significance, and description of the session.

Birds of a Feather (BOF)

BOFs provide a space for colleagues who want to have an informal discussion on a particular topic or group of topics within one of the aforementioned tracks. There is no AV equipment provided for BOFs. The proposer(s) serve as discussants in the BOF sessions. Each BOF session will be 45 minutes in length.

Course Demo

Selected institutions will demonstrate a specific innovation or an innovative course offering. Presenters will submit the name of the institution and the course they will present along with a maximum 150-word description of the course. Each course demo session will be maximum 45 minutes in length including Q & A.

    • All external work referenced must be properly cited in APA or MLA format
    • All submissions must be in PDF format
    • Authors will submit using the submission form at http://bit.ly/FTTS_form

Each presenter will:

    • Register and pay for the conference by March 15, 2018. Registration will be open on Friday, February 2, 2018. Because this conference is supported in part by a Perkins Leadership grant through the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, registration is an affordable $50 for non-Texas residents and $40 for Texas residents.
    • Complete a presenter form by March 15, 2018. This form will be included in the notification of acceptance to present at the conference.
    • Be responsible for his/her own travel expenses.
    • Notify the organizers of any changes to sessions by March 20, 2018.
  • All submission instructions and conference information will be posted on the conference website at www.sites.austincc.edu/cbec
  • The submission deadline is February 15, 2018
