Using Thesis Statements

The thesis statement of any piece of writing, often in one sentence, will

  • Clearly communicate what will be discussed.
  • Preview the purpose.
  • Forecast the main organizing pattern.

For example, in an article on welding that compares welding with stainless steel rods to welding with aluminum ones, the following is an example of an effective thesis statement:

This essay will explain the advantages and disadvantages of using stainless steel rods as opposed to aluminum ones.
