Join the Austin Community College dance department for our Monthly Major Masterclass. MMMs bring together current students, dance alumni, and members of the community for masterclasses with nationally and internationally acclaimed dance artists, from 10:00 – 11:30 am on the first Friday of every month. MMMs are designed to enhance our students’ experience by presenting a broader range of dance styles and honoring various dance backgrounds.
Our MMMs are free and open to the community! All are welcome. Mark your calendar and reserve your spot.

Class Description:
Hula, or Hawaiian Dance, is one of the most iconic cultural expressions of Hawai`i. Learn more about the music, language, culture, and stories of the islands as Kumu Hula Pei-San Ka’uakukulunuiahina Brown leads you through a full-body warm up and the six most basic steps of hula, and then teaches you a hula dance and chant that is a favorite in Hawai`i, Ke Ao Nani (The Beautiful World).

Pei-San Ka’uakukulunuiahina Brown holds the title of Kumu Hula, which is equivalent to a graduate degree in the study of hula. She currently teaches Intermediate/Advanced Hula (Hawaiian Dance) at Ballet Austin’s Butler Center for Dance & Fitness. She previously danced with Disney Entertainment Arts (Los Angeles), Third Coast Jazz (Austin), Austin Musical Theatre (Austin), Halau Ho’ola Ka Mana O Hawai’i (Dallas and Houston), and as a principal dancer in the movie Miss Congeniality (2000). She was honored to compete in the 2006 Merrie Monarch Hula Festival as part of Halau Ho`ola Ka Mana O Hawai`i.

Pei-San holds a Master of Arts in Education with an emphasis in Curriculum and Instruction from The University of Texas at Austin and has completed her doctoral course work in the same field. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Dance Pedagogy and a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences from the University of California at Irvine. As Ballet Austin’s Director of Education since 2004, she developes educational experiences and arts-related curricula for Central Texas schools and Ballet Austin audience members.
