Computer Science and Information Technology (CSIT)
Artificial Intelligence (AI) Use Policy
Introduction
The CS&IT Division provides a clear policy regarding the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools and systems. This includes, but is not limited to, generative AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Copilot, Claude), AI-powered search engines, code assistants, automated summarizers, image generators, data analysis tools, and any software that uses machine learning to assist, generate, evaluate, or modify content.
This policy is designed to help you understand:
• When and how AI tools may be used appropriately to support your learning
• When AI use is limited or prohibited
• Your responsibility when incorporating AI into academic work
Our goal is to promote ethical, transparent, and responsible use of AI while preserving academic integrity and meaningful skill development.
Rationale
The CS&IT Division recognizes that AI technologies are increasingly embedded in professional computing, business, and technical environments. Students must learn how to use AI effectively and responsibly as part of their workforce preparation.
This policy balances:
• Encouraging responsible AI use aligned with industry practices
• Preserving your opportunity to develop foundational skills
• Maintaining fairness and transparency in assessment
• Ensuring compliance with academic integrity standards
AI is a tool to enhance learning, not a substitute for learning.
Definition of GAI
For this policy, AI includes any digital system that uses machine learning, natural language processing, automation, or predictive modeling to assist in generating, analyzing, modifying, or evaluating content.
This includes, but is not limited to:
- Generative AI tools (ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot, Gemini, etc.)
- AI coding assistants (GitHub Copilot, CodeWhisperer, etc.)
- AI-enhanced search engines
- AI image, video, or media generators
- Automated paraphrasing or summarization tools
- AI-based debugging or error-correction systems
- AI-driven writing enhancement beyond basic spellcheck/grammar
- Any automated system that produces academic or technical work on your behalf
Basic spellcheck and grammar tools are generally excluded unless they substantially alter content or structure.
Resources
When GAI use is permitted, students should learn to use these tools ethically and effectively. Recommended resources include:
- ACM Code of Ethics
- IEEE Code of Ethics
- OpenAI Usage Guidelines
- Microsoft Responsible AI Principles
- Austin Community College – Artificial Intelligence Policies
These resources can help you understand responsible, transparent use of AI tools in software development and writing.
Assessment and Disclosure
When AI use is allowed or required:
• You must disclose any AI tool used in completing your work.
• You remain fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, and quality of your submission.
• You must verify outputs and ensure you understand the material.
• Instructors may explicitly allow, restrict, or require AI use in specific assignments.
• Failure to disclose AI use when required constitutes academic dishonesty.
Example of Disclosure (Code):
</> Python
# Function structure inspired by AI tool (ChatGPT), May 2026
# All logic verified and modified by the student
Example of Disclosure (Written work):
Portions of this draft were developed with the assistance of ChatGPT (May 2026). All analyses and revisions were completed and verified independently.
Usage Permissions
Prohibited Uses
- Submitting AI-generated content as your own without disclosure
- Using AI during exams, quizzes, or assessments labeled “No AI Assistance.”
- Using AI to complete assignments that are intended to assess individual skill mastery
- Using AI to bypass core learning objectives
- Misrepresenting AI output as your own reasoning or problem-solving
Permitted Uses
- Brainstorming ideas
- Reviewing general concept
- Drafting code snippets (with modification and verification)
- Debugging assistance
- Improving clarity of writing
- Learning through AI explanations
Required Uses
Certain assignments may require the use of AI tools to simulate real-world professional practice (e.g., AI-assisted coding, prompt engineering, and AI-based debugging workflows).
When AI use is required:
- Instructions will specify acceptable tools
- Documentation of AI interaction will be required
- Students must demonstrate understanding of AI-assisted output
Penalties
Violations of this policy may result in:
- A reduced grade or zero on the assignment
- Failure of the course for serious or repeated violations
- Referral to the College’s Academic Integrity process
Exceptions
Instructors may grant explicit written exceptions for specific assignments. Requests must be made in advance and approved in writing.
Questions?
If you are unsure whether your use of AI is appropriate, ask your instructor before submitting your work.
Summary
AI is a powerful tool in computing and technology fields. This policy prepares you for responsible, professional AI use while maintaining academic integrity.
Use AI to enhance your learning, not replace it!
