Job Description

The Moore-Hancock Farmstead is seeking a welding student, metalworker, or craftsperson to create a historically appropriate cattle branding iron to be used as a museum replica and teaching object.

We are looking for a decorative-only replica, made of iron. The desired style is an old-fashioned branding iron with the brand on one end, a long metal rod, and a handle on the other end. If possible, we would prefer a traditional round rod rather than a modern square rod, though we are open to discussing what is feasible and affordable.

The Farmstead has specific historical brand designs connected to the site’s history. We can provide a copy of the desired brand design upon request for anyone interested in the project. At this stage, we are seeking pricing and availability for one or possibly two branding irons.

Desired specifications:

Made of iron

Full-size branding iron

Old-style rod-and-handle construction

Preferably round rod if feasible

Historically appropriate appearance for museum use

This commission would support the Moore-Hancock Farmstead’s educational programming and would be used to help students and visitors better understand 19th-century ranching and land use in Texas.

Salary/ Pay Rate

Budget is negotiable based on materials, labor, and feasibility. We are hoping to stay near approximately $150 per branding iron if possible, but we are open to reviewing quotes.

How to Apply?

Please email Andrew Gonzales at [email protected] with a brief statement of interest. If possible, please include:

Your relevant welding or metalworking experience

Whether you have experience making tools, replicas, or custom ironwork

A copy of the desired brand design can be provided upon request. Applicants are also welcome to ask clarifying questions before submitting a quote.
