MLAB 2431: Immunohematology
- Dates: Jan. 16 – May 12, 2024
- Length of Course: 16 Weeks
- Classroom Hours: 48 (hybrid)
- Laboratory Hours: 64
Immunohematology is a specialized branch of laboratory medicine which involves the study of blood group antigens and antibodies. The processes of quality testing include quality control, basic laboratory techniques and safety. It involves the study of the principles, procedures, clinical significance and practice of a wide variety of procedures including: donor selection, component preparation and use, and techniques used to detect antigen/antibody reactions which may adversely affect a patient receiving a transfusion. The topics to be covered include: donor screening, preparation of components, antigens and antibodies of the ABO, Rh and other blood group systems, pretransfusion testing procedures, hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn, neonatal and obstetrical transfusion practice, autoimmune hemolytic anemias and adverse affects of transfusion.
- Apply the principles of safety, quality assurance, and quality control in immunohematology.
- Describe the blood collection process.
- State the preparation method, use, storage requirements, and expiration of each blood component.
- Evaluate specimen acceptability.
- State the principle of each testing procedure performed in Immunohematology.
- State the characteristics of the ABO, Rh, and other blood group systems.
- List the methods used to identify the most commonly encountered blood group antibodies.
- Describe the three types of hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN).
- Describe the testing, antibody specificity, and treatment for HDFN.
- List the adverse complications of blood transfusion.
- State the methods for evaluating a positive direct antiglobulin test.
- State the types of immune hemolytic anemias including results of serologic testing and compatibility testing which must be performed.
- State the requirements for performing compatibility testing.
- Describe the quality control performed in Immunohematology.
- Explain the next steps when the quality controls are out of range in Immunohematology.
- Describe the immune process as it relates to Immunohematology.
- Describe the donor selection process and accurately determine donor eligibility when given results of donor screening tests.
- Describe the preparation and the appropriate use of blood components by determining the component needed based on laboratory data.
- Describe the characteristics of the antigens and antibodies of the ABO, Rh, and other blood group systems, applying the knowledge to sample testing and case study materials.
- Perform blood bank testing in the resolution of antibody problems, HDFN, and transfusion reactions.
- Evaluate blood bank laboratory test results.
- Evaluate additional testing required for certain laboratory results of a patient.
- Correlate test results with the patient’s condition.
