Guideline
A student wishing to enroll in a course load of 18 or more credit hours in a fall or spring semester or more than 12 credit hours in a summer semester must have written permission from a Dean of Student Affairs or designee prior to enrollment.
Students should have an appropriate academic need to take excess classes and a proven history of academic achievement to support the excess load. Student Affairs Deans may also require the student to utilize academic support services in order to support successful academic performance in the additional course(s).
Procedure
Students obtain the Student Request to Exceed Course Load form from an Academic Guidance Specialist to begin the process. They will submit the completed form and any additional documents to any campus Student Affairs Office.
The Dean of Student Affairs reviews and approves or denies the request and then notifies the student of the decision. Consideration is given to the student’s current, cumulative GPA, course withdrawal history, persistence and retention history, historical academic standing each semester and course performance history in related and relevant courses, current workload and other factors including, but not limited to TSI status and other academic preparedness factors.
The Dean may also consult with the instructional department regarding the program of study and the advisability of the requested course(s) and course load. The final decision is at the Dean of Student Affairs discretion and all decisions are final.
If approved, the Dean of Student Affairs uses the Student Petition screen in Colleague (STPE) to enter the semester and additional overload course(s) the student is approved to take. The approval is only applicable in the semester entered on the screen.
