Telework:  Faculty Work Location and Expectations for On-Campus Presence

Guideline/Procedure
4.0300.11.2
Effective date: 07/17/26

Austin Community College is a student-centered institution that prioritizes in-person engagement, learning, access, and collaboration. Faculty play a critical role in fostering student success through visible, consistent presence across campus and instructional sites.

  1. On Campus Presence
Full-time faculty are expected to maintain regular and meaningful on-campus presence to support instruction, student engagement, and institutional responsibilities.
This includes, but is not limited to, participation in classroom teaching, reference desk hours, office hours, departmental activities, and college-wide initiatives.
Full-time faculty on ACC campuses are required to conduct scheduled office hours in person on campus or at their assigned instructional site that are aligned with the assigned instructional modality and student needs to ensure consistent and equitable student access and engagement. Full-time dual credit faculty who are assigned to teach only courses designated as dual credit on high school campuses may hold virtual office hours to accommodate the needs of dual credit students. Office hours must be structured to provide reliable, individualized support for students and to accommodate student preferences.
  2. Department Meetings
Department meetings and other departmental activities are expected to include a face-to-face option on campus as the standard practice. Recognizing shared governance principles, provisions for online attendance will be made to ensure that faculty members can engage meaningfully in the work of the department.  Full-time faculty are expected to attend and actively participate in these activities on campus, at instructional sites, or at designated college-approved locations.
  3. Service
Full-time faculty service to the college, including committee work, program development, student engagement activities, and institutional initiatives should be conducted in person wherever feasible to promote collaboration, access, and community engagement. Where appropriate, provision for online attendance will be made to ensure meaningful service to the college.
Full-time faculty maintain professional discretion over work location for activities such as course preparation, grading, and other responsibilities not requiring in-person presence.  This flexibility must not interfere with required on-campus responsibilities, student access, or departmental expectations.
  4. Compliance
Department Chairs, Head Librarians, and deans are responsible for ensuring full-time faculty schedules and activities align with college expectations for on-campus presence, student access, and institutional engagement.
Department Chairs and Deans may require adjustments to full-time faculty schedules or activities to ensure compliance with these expectations.
