MLAB 1415: Hematology

The study of blood cells in normal and abnormal conditions. Instructions in the theory and practical application of hematology procedures, including quality control, quality assurance, safety, manual and/or automated methods as well as blood cell maturation sequences, and normal and abnormal morphology with associated diseases.
By the end of this course the student should be able to:
- Apply principles of safety, quality assurance, and quality control in hematology.
- Determine suitability of hematology specimens and dispose of them in appropriate biohazard containers.
- Compare and contrast hematology values under normal and abnormal conditions.
- Evaluate normal and abnormal cell morphology with associated diseases.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the cell components of human blood and characteristics, functions, and abnormalities and disease states of each.
- Demonstrate proficiency in skills necessary to perform blood cell counts, and evaluations of blood elements within stated limits of accuracy.
- Demonstrate compliance with OSHA safety regulations for blood-borne pathogens.
- Identify principles and procedures of hematology tests to include sources of error and clinical significance of results.
