Architectural and Ornamental Metals

The Welding Technology Department at Austin Community College offers two certificates and an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Architectural and Ornamental Metals, preparing students for careers creating architectural and ornamental metal items using welding and forging fabrication techniques.

• Introduction to Fabrication Certificate
  • This program can be completed in as little as two semesters.
  • All of the courses are applicable to the AAS in Architectural and Ornamental Metals.
• Advanced Fabrication Certificate
  • To be taken after the Introduction to Fabrication Certificate.
  • This program can be completed in as little as two semesters.
  • All of the courses are applicable to the AAS in Architectural and Ornamental Metals.
• Architectural and Ornamental Metals AAS
  • A two-year degree that builds a strong foundation in welding, fabrication, and blacksmithing.
  • Includes 5 general education courses from other areas of the college.

Program Locations

• The courses that are specific to the Architectural and Ornamental Metals programs are offered at the Riverside Campus. They are:
  • WLDG-1401 Metalsmithing
  • WLDG-1405 Art Metals
  • WLDG-1417 Introduction to Layout and Fabrication
  • WLDG-1453 Intermediate Layout and Fabrication (prerequisite is WLDG 1417)
  • WLDG-2435 Advanced Layout and Fabrication (prerequisite is WLDG 1453)
  • WLDG-2440 Advanced Art Metals (prerequisites WLDG 1453 and WLDG 2441)
  • WLDG-2441 Power Hammer (prerequisite WLDG 1401)
  • WLDG-2478 Advanced Metalsmithing (prerequisite WLDG 2441)
• The technical welding courses in the AOM program can be taken at either the Riverside or the Round Rock Campus. They are:
  • WLDG 1428 Introduction to Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW)
  • WLDG 1430 Introduction to Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) and Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW)
  • WLDG 1434 Introduction to Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW)

Program Costs

ACC charges tuition and fees based on the student’s residency. Since those students living within our taxing district already support the college through their taxes, they pay the lowest fees. See full tuition and fees information here.

An in district student will pay $391 for each welding course in the AOM program.

An out of district student will pay $1,195 for each welding course in the AOM program.

An out of state student will pay $1727 for each welding course in the AOM program.

In addition to tuition and fees, students are required to purchase certain supplies and tools. The required list varies by course. The full list can be found here.

There is one textbook which is required in the AOM program. It is Welding Principles and Applications by Larry Jeffus. This book is in its 9th edition.
