Code Welding

The Welding Technology Department at Austin Community College offers a variety of awards to prepare our students for the many careers available in the field of welding. We train students to weld in accordance with the standards of several codes, including the American Welding Society D1.1 Structural Steel Code, the API 1104, and the ASME Section IX.

Our Multiple Process Welding Occupational Skills Award stacks into our college credit certificate in Structural Welding, which leads into the Pipe Welding Certificate. All of those courses apply toward an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Code Welding.

  • Multiple Process Welding Occupational Skills Award
    • Can be earned in one semester.
    • All of the courses are applicable to all welding AAS’s: Code Welding, Architectural and Ornamental Metals, and Welding Inspection. All courses are also required for the Structural Welding Certificate.
  • Structural Welding Certificate
    • This program can be completed in as little as two semesters.
    • Focuses on
    • All of the courses are applicable to the AAS in Code Welding or Welding Inspection.
  • Pipe Welding Certificate
    • To be taken after the Structural Welding Certificate.
    • This program can be completed in as little as two semesters.
    • Students have the option of taking WLDG 2179 Welder Qualification as their capstone for this award. This affords them the opportunity to earn American Welding Society welder certifications.
    • All of the courses are applicable to the AAS in Code Welding.
  • Ultrahigh Purity Piping Certificate
    • This program can be completed in as little as two semesters.
    • All courses can be applied toward the AAS in Code Welding or Inspection.
  • Code Welding AAS
    • A two-year degree that builds a strong foundation in welding plate and pipe and blueprint reading.
    • Includes 5 general education courses from other areas of the college.
    • Students have the option of taking WLDG 2179 Welder Qualification as their capstone for this award. This affords them the opportunity to earn American Welding Society welder certifications.

Program Costs

ACC charges tuition and fees based on the student’s residency. Since those students living within our taxing district already support the college through their taxes, they pay the lowest fees. See full tuition and fees information here.

An in district student will pay $391 for each 4 credit hour welding course in the technical welding programs.

An out of district student will pay $1,195 for each 4 credit hour welding course in the technical welding programs.

An out of state student will pay $1727 for each 4 credit hour welding course in the technical welding programs.

In addition to tuition and fees, students are required to purchase certain supplies and tools. The required list varies by course. The full list can be found here.

The textbook which is required for most courses in the technical welding programs is Welding Principles and Applications by Larry Jeffus. This book is in its 9th edition. The book Metallurgy is required for WLDG 1337 Welding Metallurgy. For WLDG 1413 and WLDG 2431 the book Symbols for Welding by the Hobart Institute of Welding Technology is required, and Blueprint Reading for Welders and Fitters, EW-459, Hobart Institute of Welding Technology may also be required.
