Dear Faculty Colleagues,

There is a lot going on at the college! See below for new efforts on student support, testing center policies, and more.

Senate Meetings / Minutes / Agendas

1/24/20 Senate Meeting – Minutes will be approved and posted this week. I’ll send a separate email once they are complete.

1/24/20 – Senate Leadership Meeting with Dr. Rhodes and Cabinet – Agenda is posted on the senate website. Minutes have now been approved. They are available HERE and will be posted on the website shortly.

2/14/20 Senate Meeting – noon to 2pm HBC 301  – This is the second and final call for agenda items for our February meeting. Please send items for consideration to me at [email protected] or to your campus senator by February 7.

Newsworthy

Slides to Share on Food and Housing Insecurity – In the last Standard, I mentioned the results of the “The RealCollege Survey”. It found that of our students who responded to the survey, 42% are food insecure, and 53% are housing insecure. At the meeting where this information was shared, the presenter challenged faculty to help bring information about ACC resources to students in a way that reduces stigma. The suggestion was to explain to our classes that there are MANY students at ACC who could use some help, and that ACC has help for them. Encourage your classes to share these resources with their “friends” – because you never know who might benefit.

I’ve created TWO SLIDES that you can add to any presentation you do in class. Feel free to edit them in ways that make them work for you. Only with repeated education can we make sure that students will know about all the ways they can get help if they need it.

It is an issue of basic needs. If we can help students eat well, sleep well, and feel safe, they’ll have more energy to put into the hard work of being scholars. Let me know if you try these slides out, and tell me how they work for you.

Changes to Testing Center Policies – New policies were shared with all faculty in a February 3 memo from Provost Charles Cook. Please review the information in the email with the subject line “[Full-Time Faculty] Update – Testing Center Guidelines”. These policies did undergo our Shared Governance process, were sent out for comment and were approved by the Academic and Student Affairs Council. I will keep everyone in the loop about where they can get additional information once it is available.

Current Action Items (These are reminders for things I’ve already sent out):

SCHOLARSHIPS!!! [due April 1, 2020] As mentioned in the last Standard, the ACC Foundation has ONE APPLICATION for all 700 scholarships they offer our students. Applications are open now, so please let your students know about them. There is help to complete the applications available at every ACCelerator. Students can view THIS PAGE to get the application, and help to apply.

New Reporting Rules – Starting January 1, there are new rules regarding reporting of sexual assault, harassment, dating violence and stalking. You should have received an email from Charlene Buckley on January 14 entitled “Important Legislative Update”. Please take a moment to review that information to ensure that you are in compliance. You can learn more, and find the form for reporting at www.austincc.edu/compliance.

Parking Grace Period – Ends February 6. Be sure to get a permit before that date!

The Academic Master Planning (AMP) process will continue on February 7 with Area of Study meetings. Learn more about it on the timeline portion of the AMP website. Reach out to your department chair or dean if you want to be a part of your Area of Study team!

Rio Grande Attache Building Cleanout – Due to upcoming construction, this entire building needs to be cleaned out. If you have anything in the building, February 28 is the final deadline to get your things out. Anything left after that date will be disposed of.

Best,
