THE SENATE STANDARD – ISSUE 5

Dear Faculty Colleagues,

It’s our FIFTH issue! My, how time flies!

Senate Meetings / Minutes / Agendas

  • 9/13/19 Senate Meeting – The senators are currently working on approving the minutes from this meeting. Keep your eyes peeled. They will be posted in an email later this week.
  • 10/11/19 Senate Meeting – SECOND CALL FOR AGENDA ITEMS – Our next meeting will be noon-2pm in HBC 301. This is the second call for agenda items. Please submit any items to [email protected] or to your senator by the deadline of Tuesday, October 1.
    • Agenda in Progress – Mike Midgley will join us to talk about the campus master planning process, and how faculty can get involved. Amanda Dean, from our new ombuds office will discuss her role and how she can help serve faculty.

New Action Items:

  • Change in Senate Emails – At the 9/13/19 meeting, senators voted unanimously to ensure that the senate mailing list is used only for senate business or things that directly relate to the role of faculty at ACC. As such, they asked that we limit the number of emails the senate forwards about special interests, internal and external marketing. When we get these requests, we will be asking people to share their emails with TLED, for inclusion in the TLED newsletter. To ensure that you continue to receive news of this type, please be sure to subscribe. Details are below:

Current Action Items (These are reminders for things I’ve already sent out):

  • PLEASE HELP us raise money for student scholarships! Boots and Bats Donations [deadline October 11] – The Senate has been invited to create a basket to be auctioned off at the Boots and Bats Silent Auction on November 2. Any money earned will go to supporting ACC Student Scholarships. Senate Treasurer Beth Frye has agreed to coordinate our efforts. PLEASE donate an item for our basket! To learn more about Boots and Bats, including how to donate, please read THIS LETTER from Beth.

Newsworthy

  • Senate Standing Committee on Nominations – This group has already met and has proposed a timeline for special elections in early December (per our bylaws) to fill the two empty senator positions. If you are a faculty member on the Elgin or San Gabriel campuses, please consider running to represent your colleagues. We’ll be in touch with more as the nomination process gets closer.
  • Testing Centers – This summer, a “Testing Center Workgroup” convened to discuss possible changes to the current testing center policy. The workgroup submitted a report to the administration, and you can see it HERE. This report will now have to go through the shared governance structure, and will be discussed at the next ASAC (Academic and Student Affairs Council) meeting on October 4. If you are interested in this item, you should contact a faculty senate representative on that council and share your perspectives on the report. You can find the representatives’ names on the ASAC page. They are listed as “FT Faculty (One from different dean areas)”. It is important to note that the report suggests that any changes to testing center policy be presented to faculty with one full semester of lead time, so no changes will be implemented this semester.

I’ll be in touch later this week with the complete minutes from the 9/13/19 meeting. Thanks for your careful attention and support of your faculty senate!

Best,
