THE SENATE STANDARD – ISSUE 2.1

Dear Faculty Colleagues,

When I considered running for FTFS President about a year and a half ago, I knew my plate would fill up fast. But it never crossed my mind we’d be living through a pandemic that would disrupt just about everything. No doubt, AY21 will present the ACC community with many new challenges. I am optimistic, nonetheless, that the Full-Time Faculty Senate will thrive and continue to leverage our Shared Governance structures to shape the college’s response to the pandemic.

As we launch AY21, we start in a good place. The disruption sparked innovations by faculty, staff, and leadership. Everyone went “above and beyond” to serve ACC students and one another. Our students did better than we might have expected. But we go into this year with many unknowns. How will we address our students’ needs of as we survive then recover from the pandemic? When will campuses open fully, with what precautions in place? How might funding issues disrupt our jobs and lives?

My goals focus on leveraging the gains we’ve made in reputation and influence under previous senate presidents to give us a prominent voice in defining how best to serve our students. We will do so while strengthening “faculty primacy in the establishment and implementation of academic, student success, and faculty professional issues and policies,” as stated in the FTFS mission and purpose statement.

You and I are very fortunate a great group of our peers stepped forward to join the Faculty Senate Leadership Team. Missi Patterson remains involved as Past President and Samantha Croft is our President Elect. Julz Decker will keep the website up to date as our Communications Officer, and Jesse Saunders will document all the meetings as our Secretary. Kisha Moragne will keep an eye on the budget as our Treasurer, and Keri Moczygemba will help us run inclusive and efficient meetings as our Parliamentarian.

Have a great semester, keep in touch, and get involved!

Newsworthy

ACC Online Meeting Backgrounds – The Office of Communications & Marketing has created new online meeting backgrounds for faculty and staff that can be used to provide a more formal setting or infuse a little ACC pride into meetings, classes, or virtual hangouts.

These backgrounds can be used on Webex or Zoom meetings. You can choose from dozens of ACC graphics or images. They’re downloadable from the austincc.edu/ocm webpage under “Resources” or click here. They are easy to use and instructions are included.

Fall Presidential Student Achievement Award – The Office of Student Life is excited to announce that nominations for the Fall Presidential Student Achievement Award officially open on Monday, August 31 and will stay open through Friday, October 16, 2020. We hope that you will nominate a student this semester!

The Presidential Student Achievement Award is the most prestigious student award given by ACC. The recipient must demonstrate academic excellence, service to the college and community, and commitment to ACC values and vision. Perks of this award include a $500 check, a plaque, and the opportunity to deliver the student address at commencement. In order to be eligible for this award, students must meet the following requirements (Student Life Staff will verify eligibility upon submission. Don’t worry about checking these yourself):

  • Minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA
  • Attended ACC a minimum of two consecutive semesters
  • Graduating in Fall 2020

In this new virtual world, it is more important than ever to recognize our students for their hard work and resilience. Help us celebrate the outstanding students at ACC by submitting a nomination. Nominations can come from anyone on campus, including faculty, staff, and students. However, students cannot nominate themselves. The more nominations, the merrier! Access the nomination form here: PSAA Nomination Form.

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions about the award or the nomination process. You can also find additional information about eligibility requirements and the selection process on the Student Life PSAA web page

MyACC Faculty & Staff Portal – Austin Community College District is launching a new portal for faculty and staff. MyACC for Faculty and Staff provides single sign-on, personalized access to resources and services unique to faculty and staff at the college. With MyACC, you get:

  • A reliable destination to find key resources based on your role at ACC.
