HART 1407 is the student’s introduction to the refrigeration cycle of air conditioning and refrigeration systems. This course includes basic thermodynamics, heat transfer, temperature/pressure relationship, safe handling of refrigerants, refrigeration containment, and refrigeration components.
The student uses Scott and Hampden Refrigeration Trainers to introduce and learn the basic thermodynamics of the refrigerant cycle. In addition to the saturated temperature/pressure relationship, the student becomes well versed in super heat, sub cooling, and the various states and conditions of the refrigerant.
This class reviews and emphasizes EPA regulations, including the de minimis purging of manifold gauges and the use of low loss fittings. It provides a good background and basis for the student’s preparation for the EPA Certification examination.
In the second half of the course the student is introduced to and certified on the safe use of the oxy-acetylene welders, both the full size and the portable “peanut rig”. In addition to the welder, the student is trained in the use all of the associated tools used in the fabrication and mechanical connections of copper lines. This includes tubing benders, flaring tools, swaging tools. and others. Students use these welding tools to become proficient in brazing. Brazing joins parts by heating them to more than 840°F and applying a filler metal that has a melting temperature below that of the base metal.
The oxy-acetylene welder skills developed in this course are one of the most critical skills the student must develop and perfect in his/her career path to becoming a HVAC technician. This course introduces all methods of leak detection.
