Great Questions Community Seminars

Overview

The Great Questions Community Seminars provide students, faculty, staff, and community members an opportunity to discuss persistent human questions guided by authors and texts that help participants do so productively.

Accomplishments

  • In AY23, participants met to discuss Plato‘s Apology, Sophocles‘ Antigone, and Dr. King‘s Letter from a Birmingham Jail. All seminars were in person at Highland Campus.
  • 268 students, 43 faculty/staff members, and six community members RSVP’d to attend one of the four community seminars. Each seminar averaged 50 in-person participants, with our last seminar on Dr. King‘s Letter from A Birmingham Jail welcoming about 70 students and eight faculty/staff members.
  • Evaluation survey data indicate that the seminars serve students from all areas of study.

Impact

  • 97% of students reported that their overall experience at the Community Seminar was excellent or very good, with 77% reporting their experience as excellent.
  • 98% of students respondents said the readings and discussion questions were thought-provoking and important.
  • 91% of respondents said they likely or very likely to attend a future Community Seminar.
  • Students’ written feedback was overwhelmingly positive, including comments like, “The breakout room really discussed good things and it‘s fun to see people enjoying this seminar,“ and, “had a great time! I’d love it if these were held more often.“

Next Steps

In AY24, we plan to hold at least four Community Seminars at Highland Campus, and perhaps more at other ACC campuses.
