Pillar 3: Progress – Academic Alert

Overview

In spring 2022, ACC launched a pilot of Inspire Academic Alert. The Academic Alert tool facilitates a proactive teamwork approach among classroom faculty and the academic guidance team members in Student Affairs to support student success. Faculty members can quickly notify students (and their assigned academic guidance team member) regarding areas of concern or accomplishment. Faculty can also recommend a plan of action that students can discuss with their academic guidance specialist. The academic guidance team member helps the student connect with resources and supports that can contribute to their educational goals. Full Implementation began in fall 2022.

Accomplishments

  • For fall 2022, 1,047 alerts were raised for 823 unique students. This included 674 high alerts and 373 medium-level alerts.
    • Alerts were raised by 148 unique authors/faculty members.
  • For spring 2023, 1,315 alerts were raised (881 high level alerts, 434 medium-level alerts) by 177 unique authors/faculty.
    • 1,107 unique students were part of these alerts, and the median time between alert and student contact was two days.

Impact

Students today have non-academic challenges that become academic challenges. The Academic Alert tool allows faculty—who get to know our students better than anyone else at the college—to offer help by connecting them to those in Student Affairs who know the array of resources and supports we offer students. Connecting students to available resources can be the difference between dropping a class and persisting to the end with a successful course grade.

Next Steps

The Academic Alert is currently underutilized by ACC faculty. A concerted effort to help all faculty understand its ease of use and potential impact on student success will be required to support broad adoption of the tool.
