Pillar 4 – Succeed: Required Midterm Advising for High School Students

Overview

With the increase in High School Programs Academic Success staffing and the new utilization of Inspire, staff have been able to expand and improve their outreach and utilization of the midterm advising report to more dual credit students. These systems have enabled staff to better identify students who might be struggling in courses and benefit from face-to-face midterm advising discussions with our staff.

Accomplishments

  • Midterm advising has been expanded among the staff who work exclusively with Career Academy students. In the peak midterm advising month in the spring 2023 semester, High School programs staff had almost 680 individual face-to-face advising sessions and engaged in more than 2,000 online contacts.
  • Between fall 2021 and fall 2022, overall success rates (course completion with a “C” or better) for dual credit students rose from 86% to 89% and for Early College High School (ECHS) students the rate rose from 76% to 80%.

Impact

High School Programs students continue to consistently outperform traditional students in successful course completion, persistence, and educational goal completion, especially among populations that have traditionally been underserved in college. While midterm advising has a particular focus on Career Academy students, the goal is to serve all dual credit students to support successful completion of courses and persistence into the next semester.

  • In spring 2023, ECHS students (who represent the vast majority of our historically underserved populations) accounted for a record 43% of all High School Programs student enrollments and reflect the focus of midterm advising.
  • After experiencing some pandemic-related dips in success, course completion rates among High School Program students have returned to pre-pandemic levels. In fall 2022, 85% of all High School Program course enrollments resulted in students earning a “C” or better. That percentage rose slightly to 86% in spring 2023.

From fall 2022 to spring 2023, 95% of ECHS students remained enrolled in ACC courses, while 81% of all dual credit students were retained from fall 2022 to spring 2023.

Next Steps

High School Programs staff will continue to work with our partners both within ACC and the community to expand use of midterm advising and Inspire early alerts to identify students who may require interventions to improve their chances of successful course completion. We will also continue to articulate the benefits of midterm grade reporting to ACC dual credit faculty as a means for students and their advisors to obtain an accurate snapshot of how the students are faring in their courses at the midpoint of the term.
