Literacy Equity & Inclusion Assessment Project

Overview

This is a newly conceived experimental project that will assess the digital literacy competency of Arts & Digital Media (ADM) students in their chosen area of study. Using the Program Student Learning Outcome (PSLO), “Students will effectively use appropriate technology, software and tools to produce creative works,” all 11 departments in the Arts & Digital Media Division will assess their students’ digital literacy with a standard rubric.

Accomplishments

  • An assessment rubric was created by departmental assessment coordinators and the ADM assistant dean of pathways, data & assessment, and approved by department chairs in the division.
  • Administration of the rubric will generate disaggregated data that provide insight into the success of the various student demographic areas that our discipline assessment cycle software does not.

Impact

While we know that technology is a vital component in areas of creative digital media, studies are showing that technology is quickly becoming an inherent component in all of the arts. Even in performance-centered arts such as dance and hand-produced art such as studio art and jewelry, innovations in technology are expanding and becoming influential in how artists can incorporate new technology in the creative and design process. The more we can expose our students to these technological innovations, and the more we can enhance their literacy skills to use these technological tools, the greater the impact it will have on the students as they seek to become professional artists.

The ADM dean and the ADM assistant dean of pathways, data, & assessment will work together to generate a report and disseminate this data to ADM departmental and ACC leadership.

Next Steps

Once the assessments are submitted, and the ACC Office of Institutional Research & Analytics has produced the data, the next steps will be to examine any learning gaps that may exist and to work with ADM department chairs to develop strategies to close those gaps within each department, thereby closing gaps in students across the division.
