Hyflex Teaching & Learning

Overview

Students seek flexible course options to accommodate busy schedules that often include work and family obligations, and ACC seeks to provide those flexible options. HyFlex classes allow on-campus instruction with the option to students to attend a class virtually on any given day.

Accomplishments

  • ACC piloted the HyFlex delivery mode with 18 sections in fall 2022 and expanded it to 30 sections in spring 2023.
  • Over 80 faculty members have completed training in HyFlex teaching and learning.
  • HyFlex equipment has been installed in 30 out of 40 classrooms identified for conversion to support HyFlex teaching.

Impact

In fall 2022, 168 distinct students in 19 HyFlex sections were taught by 13 dedicated instructors. These participating students‘ outcomes were remarkable, with 87% successfully completing their HyFlex courses and earning grades of A, B, or C. This is a higher success rate than all delivery modality courses offered during the same period.

These promising results underscore the value of HyFlex instruction in promoting student achievement and engagement.

Next Steps

After piloting the HyFlex delivery mode in fall 2022 with 18 and expanding it to 30 sections in spring 2023, the next step is to scale up HyFlex teaching for the upcoming academic year to meet students‘ demands for flexibility:

  • Increase the number of HyFlex section offerings: We aim to have at least 100 HyFlex course offerings in a broad range of disciplines available for the fall 2023 semester. This will give students more flexibility in selecting their preferred course delivery method.
  • Expand the number of HyFlex-equipped classrooms: Thirty out of 40 identified classrooms have been converted to support HyFlex teaching. To scale up HyFlex teaching, we are working to equip the remaining 10 classrooms with the technology needed for HyFlex courses. The process will be completed by summer 2023 to ensure all classrooms are ready for fall 2023.
  • Train additional faculty members: While more than 80 faculty members have been trained in HyFlex teaching and learning, we will continue training more faculty members. This will ensure we have enough trained faculty members to teach the increased HyFlex course offerings for fall 2023 and subsequent semesters.
  • Evaluate and improve: We continuously evaluate and improve the HyFlex teaching model by conducting surveys with faculty and students to gather feedback on the effectiveness of HyFlex teaching. This will help us identify any areas that need improvement and allow us to make the necessary adjustments.
