Overview
Through a partnership between Ascension Seton, ACC’s Professional Nursing Department, and the University of Texas at Arlington, a student nurse internship model was developed in 2022. The student nurse interns (SNIs) are hired by Ascension Seton.
Accomplishments
- The SNI is a valuable recruitment tool for graduate nurses.
- A standardized student nurse intern program allows nursing students to be employed by Ascension and earn income as they complete their clinical hours during their final semester of the associate degree nursing program.
Impact
This model facilitates hiring nurses for the future to assist in stabilizing the nursing workforce. To date, 16 ACC nursing students have been selected as student nurse interns. The preceptors, unit managers, and students report high satisfaction with this program and we anticipate that this program will grow in the future semesters.
Next Steps
We will continue to offer nursing student internships. Due to the success of the program, we are collaborating with St. David’s to offer a similar opportunity to our students.
